The price is steep, about 9 grand. But it's worth every penny. It really shines when using it for sports and wildlife. But, don't be afraid to shoot head shots or portraits with this lens. I recently used this lens for a baseball tournament in Nederland, Texas. I used it on my D300 which turns it into a 600mm 2.8 lens with the D300's 1.5 crop factor.

My flicker sets dedicated to the Nikon 400mm AF-S VR F2.8.

Here are some photos that others have taken with this lens.
http://www.flickr.com/Nikon-400mm-2.8

This lens is an AF-S and designed to work full frame cameras which makes it compatible with all Nikon DSLR Bodies. However, I think it would be a little strange to use it on anything less than the D90 or D300. I prefer using this lens on full frame cameras like the D700.

Reviewers at bhphoto.com give this lens 5 stars. And the 5 stars are well deserved, the color clarity and sharpness on this lens are amazing, almost magical.

This lens is very heavy. It weighs in at about 10 lbs. so make sure you have a very heavy duty and sturdy monopod like the Manfrotto 682B, 679B or the 680B.

This lens will also bring some attention your way if you are using it at a public event. It's size will make people very curious to see the photos you have taken. (Sometimes, size does matter.)

Want to get a little crazy?
Turn this lens into a 840mm F4 lens by adding Nikon's TC-14E II 1.4x Teleconverter on the D90 or D300.

If you are thinking about making an investment in this lens make sure you buy it from bhphoto.com. They have been in business since 1973 because, they treat their customers right.

Read more about it and buy here at bhphoto.com
Nikon 400mm AF-S 2.8 VR at www.bhphoto.com

If you're not ready to spend almost 9 grand on a lens rent it from www.borrowlenses.com
Nikon 400mm f/2.8G AF-S ED VR at www.borrowlenses.com
~

Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 Pro DX AF Review

Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 Pro DX

Here's a fantastic piece of glass from Tokina. The reviews plentiful and good on the B&H photo site (4.5 stars). In August 2009 both B&H and Adorama are sold out.

When the giants are sold out you know there are a lot of people trying to get their hands on this lens.

This lens is for cameras with the APS-C Sensor that don't need a motor built into the lens to auto focus. It will work on the D50, D70, D80, D90, D300 and the soon to be released D300s. It's a DX lens so it will not work on the D700 or the other full frame Nikon cameras. It also will not work on the D40, D60, D5000 because they all need the focusing motor built into the lens.

So if you own a compatible camera (D50, D70, D80, D90, D300) and are in need of an ultra wide angle zoom this lens is definitely worth careful consideration.

What's Cool
Price (about $600)
Fast Constant 2.8 Aperture
Heavy Duty Build Quality
Quick Focus
Sharp Focus

Nikon does not have an exact match in this range. The Nikon 14-24 F/2.8 is about $1,800 and next closest Nikon lens is a 10-24mm F3.5-4.5 variable aperture and it's a little over $800.

Summary
It's a high quality lens that's well tested and has received many great reviews and it's under $600.

Want to see some cool pics taken with this lens?
Check out this Flickr group.
http://www.flickr.com/groups/tokina11-16mm/pool/

Check the price at buy it from B&H photo. This is an extremely popular lens that every serious amateur or pro should have in their bag. This lens will work on full frame cameras like the D700 and D3. However, it will not auto focus on the D40, D60, D5000 because it does not have a built in motor (It's not an AF-S lens. A tribute to it's popularity.

This lens is well built, super fast, small, light, ultra sharp and the bokeh is awesome. It's excels in low light and night time photography. However, you should be aware that using this lens at maximum aperture will give you a very shallow DOF (depth of field) when shooting subjects close to the camera.

It's 50mm focal length makes it a good portrait lens for DX cameras like the D70, D90 and D300. However, I believe this lens deserves to be mentioned to anyone looking for an excellent lens that they can leave on their camera and shoot anything from sports to wide angle photography.

This lens is not a pro lens. So don't expect the professional build quality and don't expect it perform in low light. However, it's a great all around lens that you may never need to remove from your camera.

This lens is about $75 cheaper than the Nikon 18-200mm lens and it zooms to 270mm instead of just 200mm.

This lens gets a solid 4 stars from the people that have reviewed it on bhphoto.com. And it has received numerous awards from the press.

Awards
Outdoor Photographers - Editor's Pick
PCPhoto - Editor's Choice
Profesional Photographers - Hot One Award 2009
DPreview - Recommended
American Photo - Editor Choice 2009

The VC (Vibration Compensation) allows the use of shutter speeds that are much slower than otherwise possible. It detects movement of the camera and compensates for camera shake when shooting a moving object. This feature is a must in a lens with this long of a focal length. VC is Tamron's equivalent to Nikon's VR (Vibration Reduction).

The 18-270mm lens, made for the Nikon digital SLR system, incorporates a motor built into the lens itself like Nikon AF-S lenses. This built-in motor allows it to work on the D40, D40x, D60 and D5000. AF-S lenses or lenses with built-motors also focus quicker and are generally quieter.

Tamron makes some solid award winning products and this is one of them. They also have an outstanding 6 year warranty.

Check the price here at bhphoto.com (It's sbout $600 July 2009). You can keep your ISO low enough to keep the noise down and still get great shot in situations you won't believe until you have used it.

It's compatible with all recent Nikon cameras including the D40, D60, D5000, D300 DX cameras, as well as full frame cameras like the D700.

This lens really excels when shooting night photography, low-light sports, and landscape photography.

Be careful, it's low-light ability, sharpness and Bokeh may blow you away. It's one of those lenses that could become addicting.

The price is also a bargain. It's not often that you can find something as amazing as this lens for under $500.

I only review items that I highly recommend and get great reviews from others as well. This lens is another 5 star products. The 5 stars come from the 33 people (July 2009) that have reviewed this lens on bhphoto.com

You will never regret owning a this lens. Like the other two lenses in Nikon's magic trio it earns 5 stars from the reviewers at bhphoto.com

You get what you pay for in this lens, It's sharp, strong, fast, and expensive. (Almost $1,800).

I think it's best used for Landscape Photography, Night Photography Real Estate Photography and Special Effects Photography. I don't recommend using this lens for portraits. It can add a cool effect in portraits but don't count on your customers liking themselves looking a little rounder than they are in real life. I use the 24-70mm 2.8 or the 70-200mm 2.8 VR for portrait work.

If the $1,800 price tag is just too steep the Tokina 12-24mm is a good alternative but it's f/4 lens not a 2.8 like the Nikon.

Here's a link to the Tokina at B&H
(4.5 Stars from reviewer at bhphoto.com)

Tokina Zoom Super Wide Angle AF 12-24mm f/4 AT-X $399
No internal focusing motor
Works on the D50, D70, D90, D300

Tokina Zoom Super Wide Angle AF 12-24mm f/4 AT-X $499
With internal focusing motor
Works on all non full frame Nikon cameras including the D40, D60, D5000.

Here's the link to the Nikon 14-24mm F2.8 at bhphoto.com
Nikon AF-S Zoom Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF Lens
Works on all Nikon DSLR Cameras including full frame cameras like the D700.

~

NIKON 24-70mm f/2.8G AF-S ED Review

NIKON 24-70mm f/2.8G AF-S ED Review

Here's another one of Nikon Magic Trio. This is the middle or standard zoom of the trio. You can read reviews about this lens all day long and find nothing but great things said about this lens.

Like most of my reviews they are more recommendations rather than technical reviews. And, I agree with the other 286 people (July 2009) that have written reviews of this lens on bhphoto.com. It's a 5 star lens. It's sharp, strong, fast, and expensive. ($1,750).

IMHO this is the best lens available for shooting indoor portraits.

If you can afford it it's the absolute best lens in this zoom range money can buy! If $1,750 is to steep you may want to consider the Tamron 28-70mm F2.8 with built in motor for the D40, D60 and D5000. The Tamron will only set you back $400 and it's a pretty good lens (4 stars).

I recently bought the Tamron 28-70mm because I needed two zoom lenses in this range and I didn't want to spring for another $1,750 for the Nikon version. I thought I would just ebay the lens when I was finished. However, I ended up liking it so much I'm keeping it.

The Nikon 24-70mm F2.8 is an absolute dream lens. It really shines when using it for indoor sports, portraits, night photography and landscape photography.

You don't have to waste alot of time doing research and reading reviews on this lens. If you have the means to buy this lens get it you won't be sorry.

Buy from the most trustworthy Nikon dealer on the internet. This kit is an excellent choice.
It gets a solid 5 stars from the reviewers on the bhphoto.com site.

I never leave home for an outdoor location shoot without this kit. I use the diffusers more than the reflector to shade my subjects face from the bright sun.

Wescott products are well made and the kit comes with a carrying case and two collapsible panels. Many kit just come with one collapsible frame. This kit is excellent value for the size, options and the 2 Collapsible frames. This is a Nikon's best professional flash. If you think you need it you'll have to cough up a little over $400.

If the price seems a little to high check out the SB-600, it's a great flash and about half the cost. I think the SB-600 is great for all but the pros and very serious amateurs.

You should consider the lens you will be using when using your flash. I've used both the SB-600 and the SB-900 with the 70-200mm VR lens and the extra power of the SB-900 really shines when using a larger zoom lens.

If you were thinking about about the old SB-800 it's no longer in production. The SB-900 is the SB-800 replacement.

If the $400+ price tag hasn't scared you off
here's what makes it better than the SB-600.

It's the best and most powerful Nikon flash money can buy.
It can be used off camera in wireless TTL mode.
It can act as a commander for other wireless Nikon speedlights.
3 Light Distribution Patterns
- General Illumination
- Center-Weighted for Portraits
- Even for Groups and Interiors
Stroboscopic Effect
- Repeating flash for creating stroboscopic multiple-exposure effect.
You can Update the Firmware.
Comes with Colored Gels.
Zoom Range 17mm-200mm.
Super Fast Recycle Time.

If you want the best, buy it from the best camera dealer in the world. bhphoto.com is the best because they always have great prices and they treat their customers right.

Here's the imported version at B&H.
Nikon SB-900 AF Speedlight i-TTL Shoe Mount Flash (Imported)
(Imported version is about $20 less than the USA version)

Here's the good old USA version at B&H
Nikon SB-900 AF Speedlight i-TTL Shoe Mount Flash (USA)

Having a tough time trying to decide which speedlight/flash to buy? The Nikon 28-70mm and the 24-70 were unavailable at our local camera rental shop.

Not wanting to drop $1,600 – 1,700 on a new Nikon 24-70mm AF-S lens. My only option was to go with a less expensive Tamron or Sigma lens. I asked the salesman at a local camera store for his recommendation on the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 EX DG or the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8. He said, six one way a half dozen the other way. I went with the Tamron and was pleased with the results. My first thought was I’ll purchase the lens and ebay it when I’m finished with it. However, after using the lens I think it’s a keeper.

If you want to get started with a 2.8 lens in the 28-70mm range I have no problem recommending this Tamron lens. It’s a good beginner lens or back up lens. However, it’s not a Nikon. It does have a metal camera mount but the rest of the body of the lens is plastic and it’s very small and light for a 2.8 lens. I have not done extensive testing on this lens but I was pleased with the way it performed during the wedding. The reviews on bhphoto.com are also very postitive.

There are two models of this Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 lens. Make sure you get the one with the built in motor (Model AF09NII).

The lens without the built in motor will not work of the D40, D40x, D60, or D5000.

This lens will work on all recent Nikon DSLR cameras including the D40, D40x, D60 or D5000.

You can find it for $399 B&H photo with a $10 Tamron rebate:
Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Autofocus Lens for Digital Nikon SLR

$400 for a decent constant aperture 2.8 lens is a deal.

Here's a quick shot of a flower I took this morning... F6.3 Focal length 67mm Shutter 1/1250. Tamron does not use the term "macro" in the name. But it will focus at 13" or 33cm that's pretty darn close.

Nikon D5000 Digital SLR Camera Review

Nikon D5000 Digital SLR
It's finally here, It hit the shelves (May 2009). This digital SLR camera is much better than the D40. And a bit better than the D60. The high ISO settings (it's ability to shoot in low light is where it beats the D60.
However, I don't like it as much as the as the D90.

What's Cool

The 11 point auto focus is much better than the D40 & D60.

The low light (High ISO) capabilities are better than the D40 & D60.

12.3 megapixals (Matches the D300 and D90) Double the number of than D40 and it's a little higher than the 10 megapixal D60.

You can film HD movies like the D90.

Not so Cool

The D5000 has Live View - Live view works like cheaper point and shoot cameras. I find it very difficult to compose shots with live view. I always use the view finder (eye piece). You can use the view finder (eye piece) on all digital SLR cameras.

Vari-angle (swivel), 2.7-in monitor. I think the uses for this are rare and I'm worried about the durability. I like the monitor on the D90 and D300 much better and the D90/D300 monitor is larger and the resolution is higher.

4 frames per second a little slower than the D90 and little faster than the D60 (I wish it shot 5 or 6 frames per second)

Summary
For a little extra money I would go with the Nikon D90 Digital SLR. However, If you have the need to shoot in low light and the price of the D90 is too high, I like this camera much better than the D40 and D60.

The D5000 is currently running about $200 - $250 more than the D60. If you don't see yourself shooting in low light without the flash and don't care about the video then go with the D60.

If you have read my other reviews you know I only recommend shopping at one place. The DX just means it uses the 1.5 crop factor like the D300 and all the rest of the amateur Nikon digital SLR cameras. The 1.5 crop factor just means you get a little more zoom or reach from your lenses than you did in the old film days or with the newer pro full frame cameras like the D700. The D90 is almost as good as the D300. The D90 still has the feel of Nikon’s other amateur cameras. It’s light and easy to handle and mostly plastic. It has the same great huge LCD display as the D300. It’s about the same as the D300 in image quality and low light. The cool thing is that it’s about half the cost of the D300. $890 body only at B&H Photo.

This is the best camera Nikon makes that still has the dummy settings. Dummy settings are fantastic! Most people that buy the D40, D60 and D90 will only use the Dummy settings.

If you want the best Digital SLR camera that Nikon makes, that anyone can use, this camera is for you.

The D90 even does video. It’s the first Nikon DSLR to have this feature.

I recommend buying the D90 with the 18-200mm VR lens kit. You may not ever need to take this lens off the camera. Nikon’s 18-200mm is not a pro level lens, but any beginner or amateur will have a blast with this lens. You can shoot large group portraits and sports with this lens. This lens will be enough for 75% of the people that buy the D90.

The only reason you may want to upgrade the 18-200mm lens is to take better low light photos without the flash or you need a bigger zoom.

If you need more zoom and your not to worried about low light photography check out these lenses.
Nikon 70-300mm Zoom AF VR F/4.5-5.6 IF-ED
Nikon 80-400mm Zoom AF VR F/4.5-5.6 IF-ED

If you want to shoot low light sports like nighttime football, baseball or softball your going to have to pay up and read up. You will need a 2.8 zoom lens. You will also need to read up on your camera settings. You will have to use a high ISO like 1600 or 3200 and make sure the aperture is wide open. i.e. 2.8...

Here's the best Nikon lens for shooting outdoor low light (Nightime) sports.
Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR Lens
If you own the D90 don't freak out... This lens cost about twice as much as your camera.

If you have read my other reviews you know I only recommend shopping at one place. That's B&H photo. These guys will treat you right and they are always competitive on the price.

Buy from B&H photo:
Nikon D90 (Body Only - No Lens)
Nikon D90 with 18-200mm VR lens

Would you like to try it out for a few days before you buy it?
Nikon D90 Digital SLR at borrowlenses.com
~

Photoshop CS4 vs Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 Review

Paintshop Pro X2 vs Photoshop CS4
You here it all the time... Can you PhotoShop it? PhotoShop is now a verb just like Google. I've used both products for a long time and through many upgrades. But, I always find myself coming back to Paint Shop Pro.

The main reason I use Paint Shop Pro X2 over PhotoShop CS3 or CS4 is because I can open a picture and make my adjustments and save the file before PhotoShop ever loads.

I may be exaggerating a little but not much. It's really is a lot faster. I also find more intuitive than PhotoShop.

And don't forget the price. PhotoShop CS4 is over $600 and Paint Shop Pro X2 is $100. Paint Shop Pro will take care of ALL your routine image editing needs and it's faster and easier to use.

So why does Adobe charge so much for the product? There are more plug-ins available for PhotoShop than Paint Shop Pro but you have to pay more for the special effects plug-ins. I would only recommend PhotoShop to graphic artist who have to work with other adobe products to get there job done.

The truth is, I really don't enjoy using Adobe products. Even Adobe PDF reader is slow and has constant updates. I use Foxit Reader on my PC. I'll give Adobe credit for being inventive and having a great marketing department.

However, I will always use the tools that are most efficient at getting the job done. And for me I usually find other products that are more efficient than Adobe's products.

I thought about listing all the things you can do with PaintShop Pro X2. But, I'm just going to tell you that you can do most anything with Paint Shop Pro X2 that you can do with PhotoShop. It's a great tool that get's great reviews from the people who take the time to give it a try.

Give it a try. I know you will be please with this product.

Buy it here at B&H: Paint Shop Pro X2
PaintShop Pro X2

~

Manfrotto 682B Professional Monopod with Legs

Here's another one of my favorite pieces of professional gear. It's a heavy duty strong monopod with an added bonus of having legs. I like the clamps used for adjusting the height, they are quick and strong. I don't care for monopods with the twist and turn type of adjustments.

The pop out legs are great for using an off camera flash on the monopod. If you need a tripod then buy a tripod. Don't use this monopod as a tripod with heavy pro lenses.

The price of a little over $100 bucks is fantastic for a professional grade heavy duty monopod.

If you need a heavy duty strong monopod, I highly recommend the Manfrotto 682B. Monfrotto makes excellent professional grade products.

As always but it from the most reputable dealer of the web, bhphoto.com.

Buy it from B&H here:
Manfrotto 682B Professional Monopod

Update: I used the 682B Monopod with a Nikon 400mm 2.8 AF-S this weekend and it worked like a charm. This is a huge and heavy lens. The lens alone weighs 10.2 pounds. The monopod performed flawlessly!

If you don't think you will ever use the fold out legs here are a couple of other excellent choices that are design to hold 20 plus pounds. Both use the same type of strong and quick adjustment clamps as the 682B

Manfrotto by Bogen Imaging 679B (3216) 3 Section Monopod

Manfrotto by Bogen Imaging 680B (3249B) Compact Monopod

Try it in the real world before you buy it, rent it from borrowlenses.com
681B Manfrotto/Bogen Monopod at borrowlenses.com
(Very similar and supports the same weight as the models mentioned above)

~

SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s 4GB CF (Compact Flash) Memory Card

SanDisk cards are my favorite brand of memory cards. This card in particular has the prefect balance of price, space and speed for my use. All SanDisk products are first class. I personally only use the Extreme III or Extreme IV cards. I need the speed when a client is waiting to view their photos.

4GB seems just about perfect when shooting with my Nikon D300 digital SLR in jpeg fine mode. I can get 600+ photos on a card. I could use a bigger card but I don't like having all my eggs in one basket. I've never encountered any problems with my SanDisk cards. I have thrown away cards from other manufactures. Once I notice a problem with a card I usually throw it away as soon as I have gotten the pictures off of it. I don't like taking chances with a problematic card. It's important to have a fast card reader to go along with a fast SD or CF card. If you don't have a fast card reader you will not notice any difference when downloading from a high speed card.

Here's a link to a inexpensive ($12.00), reliable and fast hi-speed USB card reader. It reads CF, SD and more. I own 3 of these. This is the best CF SD card reader I've used.
Delkin Devices eFilm Reader-38 Card Reader/Writer

There's not a lot to say about CF cards if they do their job and they are fast enough for your needs. SanDisk products are both fast and reliable. It gets a five star reviews on the B&H site.

You will not notice the extra speed on the SanDisk Extreme IV cards unless you are using a good Firewire 800 card reader. If you are using the USB port on you computer to download photos buy the Extreme III card.

Buy more than one card, you can always use multiple cards. I keep six CF cards in my bag.

I highly recommend the SanDisk III and SanDisk IV line of memory cards.
View all SanDisk III Cards at B&H photo

View all Sandisk IV Cards at B&H photo

Buy the SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s 4GB CF from B&H photo

Nikon D300/D300S DSLR Camera Review

Nikon D300 / D300S Digital SLR
I use this camera more than any of my other cameras. The price is fantastic ($1,800 minus $100 rebate). This is the best camera Nikon makes that still uses the 1.5 crop factor. The crop factor means your lens will get a little more reach than they do with the newer pro cameras like the D700. I shoot almost exclusively with the D300S camera for sports and events. The focus is sharp and very fast.

I only recommend this camera to people who have been around photography for a while. If you don’t know or want to know what shutter speed, aperture, and ISO are, then stay away from this camera. There are a lot of settings and options on this camera. This camera does not have any dummy settings like sports, portrait, landscape etc. Serious amateurs and pros love this camera.

If the above paragraph scares you here’s what I recommend. All of the cameras below have the dummy settings. Don’t ever be shy about using dummy settings, they are great. I use them all the time if I’m using someone else’s camera.

Nikon D90 Digital SLR with 18-200mm kit lens
$1580
(fun camera with a fun lens)

Nikon D60 Digital SLR Kit with 18-55mm & 55-200mm
(Buy this kit with both lens you will need them)

Nikon D40 Digital SLR Kit with 18-55mm & 55-200mm
$750 minus $150 rebate
(Buy this kit with both lens you will need them)

This camera knocks the socks off the older D200. I don’t recommend the D200 camera to anyone anymore. If you can’t afford the D300 go with the D90 or use the list above to find one in your price range.

If you know all the technical junk and are ready to make the leap to the D300 then buy from the best dealer on the web. I order all my gear from bhphoto.com. This company is a god send. The prices are always competitive and their support and customer service are 5 star.

Buy it here:
D300S Digital SLR Camera - Body Only No Lens $1800

Accessories:
Boost your speed from 6 frames per second to 8 fps with the MB-D10. It's dirt cheap. $140-$160. I don't think you can find a professional photographer that would be caught dead with this lens.

Here's a little secret, I shot a picture that won 1st place in it's category in an international contest (8,000 entries) with the New York Institute of Photography with this lens.

It's the only zoom I had with me the day we were watching my nephew's team play this game. I shot this from a ladder setup outside the fence about 20ft past 1st base.

It's not the fastest or sharpest lens. It's the entry level big zoom lens. Just because it's inexpensive doesn't mean you can't get some great shots with it. It's fantastic for sports and wildlife. It's even fun to use for outdoor portraits. It's a much better quality than the 70-300mm with out the VR. In my opinion the VR on this lens is not that useful. The VR only comes in handy when shoot a still subject in low light while hand holding the camera. This lens does not contain fast glass so don't expect to take it to a late evening or night time sporting event and get good results.

If you want to shoot action in low light you will need to invest in the Nikon 70-200mm VR lens. The 70-200mm 2.8 VR is a fantastic pro level lens that will set you back almost 2 grand.

Read my Nikon 70-200mm 2.8 Review here

You can pick this lens for under $600 and it will work on all recent Nikon digital SLR cameras include the D40, D40x, D60 and D5000.

I have used this lens a lot for softball, baseball and football. It's a fun lens for shooting sports. Just remember to put it up when the sun starts to set.

The auto focus is pretty fast due to the AF-S motor being built into the lens. I love to recommend this lens to people just getting started shooting sports. I've used it on the D40x the D50 and the D300 and it works like a champ.

It's also light weight for a lens with this much zoom and quality.

Get it from the most reputable dealer on the web. The people at bhphoto.com are great people and they also have good prices. Stay away from any dealer on the web that offers a price to good to be true. There are a lot of fly by night camera companies out there so be smart when you make your purchase

This lens gets 4.5 stars from 225 reviews at bhphoto.com (May 2009)

Here it is a B&H photo:
Nikon AF-S VR Zoom 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 IF-ED

Try it out by renting it at borrowlenses.com.
Nikon 70-300 VR Review

Here are couple of shots I've taken with the 70-300mm VR lens. I recommend the Nikon D40 or Nikon D60 to all my friends and family and they can't wait to show me the pictures they have taken.

It's fun, light and super easy to use. This is a beginner level camera that takes great photos and anyone can use it.

Just a few of things to watch out for:

1. Older Nikon/Nikkor lenses may not auto focus on this camera.
2. When you purchase a new lens make sure it's an Nikon AF-S lens or a Sigma HSM.
3. It's a 6.1 megapixal camera. 6.1 Megapixals is plenty, I've printed some 24x36 posters of pics taken with this camera they and look great. I wish, I could show you the prints.

If you want to spend just a little more, the Nikon D60 SLR is a little better camera.

Get it with an 18-55mm kit lens for under $500. So far, I like it. My Nikon D300 with 70-200mm 2.8 VR lens attached fits inside nicely. I've attached a Tamrac MX5343 Pro 100 to the side using Tamrac's M.A.S. system. When I need everything I take my Pelican 1510 with padded dividers.

I've used this bag on several shoots now and it's perfect. I also attached a Tamrac 5683 to hold an SB-600 or SB-800. The bag holds a couple of extra CF cards and extra batteries. Pelican cases are tough as rock. When you want to protect your equipment go with Pelican cases. You can stand on them, sit on them and wash them down with a water hose with your gear inside. Other bags and cases may claim to be all-weather (AW) but, in my opinion Pelican cases are the only true all weather rain proof cases. I use the 1510 because it handles almost everything I need and this case is carry on friendly when flying. It's easy to lock when shooting on location. Lock the lid and then lock it to a fence or table and go worry free. They also carry a lifetime guarantee!

I'll save you the trouble of searching the internet for more reviews. Pelican products consistently get 5 stars. This product gets 5 stars out of 48 reviews on the bhphoto.com

Recommended Options:

Just a Little Gear: A camera, a couple of lens and a flash you can buy it with the pick and pluck foam it's easy to work with.

Get it Here: Pelican 1510 with Pick-n-Pluck Foam

More Gear: Go with the padded divider set. If you can afford it, it's a wonderful piece of glass. This lens is fantastic for outdoor portraits, sports and other event photography. It's that good! This lens will work on all Nikon DSLR cameras like the D40, D40x, D50, D60, D70, D80, D90, D300, D700 and so on. It's a super tough lens that's weather sealed and super reliable. It will most likely last though many camera upgrades. It's a pro lens that's extremely well built and tough enough for war corespondents.

I've read a lot of reviews and read a lot about peoples experience using this lens. It's hand down the best 70-200mm lens you can buy for your Nikon. Some people have a hard time stomaching the price and start considering the Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 or Tamron 70-200mm 2.8. I don't like to take chances with my equipment so I waited until I could buy the best lens available.

Buy it from B&H photo. I've shopped around for gear before and spent hours trying to save a few dollars. I don't know why, but there are a lot of crappy companies selling photo equipment on the web. Some are notorious for bait and switch scams and they switch company names every 6 months or so. Let me, save you a little trouble. bhphoto.com is the best company to buy from. They have good prices and are quick to resolve issues. I order something from these guys at least once a month.

Even if you don't end up buying from bhphoto.com. DO NOT buy from anyone that has a price to good to be true. If you do you may never get your product.

Buy it from B&H photo here:
Nikon Zoom Telephoto AF VR Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 G-AFS ED-IF

Try it out first by renting it from borrowlenses.com
Nikon 70-200mm VR F/2.8 at borrowlenses.com

If you need a little more reach consider getting a 1.4x Teleconverter. The Nikon 1.4x Teleconverter gets 5 stars from reviewers on bhphoto.com. I love mine as well. I bought the import version and saved $90. This neat tool turns your lens into a 98mm-280mm F/4 lens.

Here's the import version at bhphoto.com
Nikon TC-14E 1.4x II Teleconverter for D-AF-S & AF-I Lenses
